In 2018, I joined a project to open Okanagan Regional Library’s newest branch facility, the Westside Learning Lab.
Goals
To launch a new library space focused on technology, new ways of learning, partnerships, and community-led services and programs.
My Role
As Branch Head for this new location, I led the development of operating procedures, new work methods and processes to support the space and its embedded makerspace (a first in the system). My work included overseeing construction, purchasing, communications and staffing. Evaluation and iterative changes to the space and operations after opening continues to be my work today.
Outcome
The Westside Learning Lab opened its doors on February 23, 2019 with over 400 community members attending our grand opening event. In our first year of operations, we delivered over 250 number of programs for adults, teens, and kids along with events led by community partners. About 10,000 library materials were borrowed from our location. Our makerspace equipment gradually gained popularity and we saw 392 maker station bookings.
Our library patrons summed it up best with their feedback of our space:
I can’t believe this is in the library – I love it and have been looking for a community space.
– Program attendee comment
This is the hidden gem of the westside.

Thank you so much for the use of the Learning Lab yesterday. We were able to digitize our slides and photos. This is a very exciting community asset.
